This came up as an interesting conversation I had this weekend with my new girl. She doesn't waer a watch any longer, and we got on the subject of watches, telling time etc... She's a Spanish teacher at a High School, and made a comment that kids can't tell time, which I found interesting... She will occasionally ask (in Spanish) what the time is, and the child she randomly picks has to tell her the time (in spanish) in a reasonable ammount of time- as if you asked someone on the stret the time, and they respond (in a second or two) what the time is. She also has them write the time on hall pases and other things of that nature, and always asks the students the time. Since she doesn't wear a watch, it works well, and gives a 'real world' experience a student might run into while in a spanish speaking country. She noted more often than not, they will look at the clock blankly for a second, and then pull out their cell phones in a huff of disgust and get the dime digitally. This scares me. These "instant gratification" kids (as she put it) will be running this country some day. How do you all feel about this??

I could go down an entire rathole with this; but, in a very small nutshell, I feel that we are in trouble. In today's times, no one knows what it is like to earn anything and everything should be given instantly. Also, the 'not me' generation blames everyone except themselves, and nothing is their fault.

I don't think it's their fault as much as it is us buying the cell phones and other gadgets, and buying them for our kids, too. I bet there were some similar observations about my generation, too. Just like us, they're different but not any less capable. As for the watch thing, if it really concerns us, then let's each make it a mission to find one child and get them into wearing watches. If each forum member did this, then we'd have 3,000+ more WISes in the making! ;D

Oh wow, good topic. First of all congrats on the new gal Talktime! I am concerned, but haven't given up on this generation quite yet. Although they seem to have no respect for anyone but themselves, and they cannot finish a sentence without the "F" word, most seem to snap out of it when real life begins. I have seen nose and cheek rings coming flying out, mohawks get smoothed over, and language suddenly get better when it is time to enter the work force. Either that, or they obtain a permanent postion at the local burrito place.

I am occasionally frightened when 7th or 8th graders ask me what time it is, when we have a giant clock in front of the class. But I'm also frightened when adults can't answer basic history or geography questions when shows do the street interviews. Heck, our President isn't the brightest guy either and we elected him..... twice. Ah America, home of the.....duuhhhhh. ;D

At least the boys will learn how to use an analog watch when they get interested in girls.
I haven't witnessed any woman finding a guy wearing a digital watch sexy.
Most of my female friends aren't even a little interested in watches, but when they see a digital on a guy they write him off immediately. I dunno if they suspect the guy is cheap, to dumb to tell time, not fashionable, or something else. The "hook up" success rate with a digital watch is too low to consider. So, guys, make sure you get your son an analog and teach him to use it.

That's an interesting observation, Bull.
I had not thought about it, but I have to agree, that I certainly wouldn't FEEL sexy with a Casio digital watch on (not even the Pathfinder monstrosity).
To be fair, I did not do any homework when I was in school, because I went home to ride my bike until midnight every night. On the up-side, I did not rot my brain with Television and I'm still in great shape for it. On the down side, I am not very computer literate, and my history knowledge sucks.
BUT, I CAN rebuild an engine in a weekend and I charge $40.00/hr to fix Land-Rovers because the dealers won't touch them, and they want $120.00/hr to plug it in and scratch their heads. If the car does not plug in and tell the "mechanic" what to replace, they can't fix it. I run into this myself with my BMW. I swapped the engine and some computer related stuff HAS to be done by the dealer. I pay them $1,500.00 and it is still not fixed, because they don't have the combination of actual mechanical skill to go with the computer analyser. You have to understand the cause and effect, not just replace parts until its fixed... I could have bought the computer for that $1,500.00 myself but they won't sell it...
Don't get me started on the long list of great watches I could have had for that $1,500.00 either...

So, guys, make sure you get your son an analog and teach him to use it. I have to disagree with this one. Having a digital watch is accepted in this day and age, or not having one at all is equally acceptable. If gent has a non-digital watch, and has a very nice analog, is that an attraction? Well that depends. Did the gent spend all his money on a watch, has a horrific car or does not own a home? Then that means he is poor with finances. And if a woman is going to be attracted to a gent b/c he has a Rolex, Patek, IWC, etc., then is she a gold digger or appreciate the fine things in life which means high maintenance? I find that most women are attracted to many things, watches, the least of them. The biggest attraction aside from looks is confidence. If a person is confident in who they are (ie., no combovers, etc.) and can carry it off, and as an added bonus, have a good sense of humor, than that is more attractive than any timepiece or car that a person owns.

@shimside: I think they were right. Look what our current Boomer leadership has done to the nation: 1) massive debt. 2) inane (if not insane) foreign adventures/war 3) out-sourcing of jobs 4) decline of the dollar
and so forth.
Of course, this gang was probably the ROTC crowd, not hippies (LMAO)!

@time: the classic way a woman is taught to judge the size of a man's wallet:
1) watch 2) shoes

timefinder,
I agree that when it comes to ladies above all else, confidence is king.
Still, given my observations, I won't buy my son anything other than a handsome analog watch. Like I posted earlier, I don't know what factors make digital less appealing to woman. There are probably several. Maybe it is because they never see any celebrities in their magazines with digitals? You never see George Clooney, Brad Pitt, or Matt Damon in digital even thought you know they must own at least one for working out. Peer validation is key with women.
