As you know mineral crystals are more easily to show signs of scratch then sapphire ones. However, some watches with mineral glass are deemed as scratch-resistant as they have a layer of synthetic sapphire.
Synthetic sapphire is similar to normal sapphire. It still has a hardness of 9 out of 10 on the Mohs scale. It is just man-made.

I've scratched sapphire coated mineral crystals from hitting pretty hard, but they didn't shatter like sapphires will.

sapphire shatters worse than mineral? How? Why? I thought saphhire was tougher.

Mr. Time, sapphire will in fact shatter,I've done it.Mineral crystal is more impact resistant than sapphire, sapphire is more scratch resistant.Sapphire is harder thus more brittle.Sapphire rates 9 on mohs scale,(very hard) and mineral rates 5 on mohs scale.
