...looking at a strangers wrist. Outside the obvious "that's a nice watch you have there" wich sometimes can sound suspicious . Mine is: "is that the exact time you have?" It's simple and doesn't need explaining that you're a WIS (with emphasis on the word "Idiot") and so forth.

I'm usually pretty discreet, although if I see someone with a nice watch, I'm fairly likely to strike up a conversation. John Rigano and I often make sort of a competition out of seeing who can spot the nice watches when we're in a restaurant. ;D John

Gee I'm glad I not the only one who does this. I will usually strike a conversation about watches if I spot someone wearing a nice watch or a brand of watch that I am interested in.

I agree...I will compliment someone if I see a nice watch and they seem to enjoy talking about and asking about mine.

I'm usually pretty direct. If I recognize the watch I usually say something like "How do you like your __________?" If I can't recognize the watch it's usually something like "I was wondering what watch you're wearing, I don't recognize it". Either way I'll find out if the other person is a WIS or not by his answer. Works for me.

I'll give a compliment on their watch point blank. However, more than a couple of times I've been met with blank stares when the WIS in me comes out. As I said elsewhere here, many non-WIS wear Rolex because it's a Rolex and couldn't give a rat's a$$ about the brand beyond bragging rights.
However, when you do get a WIS, it's like the stars allign and everything is right in the world.

As I said elsewhere here, many non-WIS wear Rolex because it's a Rolex and couldn't give a rat's a$$ about the brand beyond bragging rights. However, when you do get a WIS, it's like the stars allign and everything is right in the world. ;D ;D ;D True story: Last week I saw a guy in the sandwich shop I regularly frequent who was wearing a Sub. I said, "Hey, nice Submariner." To which he replied, "what?" "Your watch - nice Rolex. I'm a watch collector." He replies, "Oh...that...yea....it's just a watch to me." I saw him again today at the same shop. I thought perhaps I caught him on an off day last week, so I thought I'd try again. "Good looking watch!" I said to him enthusiastically. "Yea, you said that last week." He replied flatly. Normally anyone is happy to receive a compliement, but this guy just wouldn't have any of it. John
