I an thinking about a buying a vintage seamaster (1950- 1970). There seem to be a fairly good supply in the marketplace in all sorts of conditions. Does anyone here own one of these? What should I be looking for apart from an operating movement and a pretty dial? Thanks in advance!

You will have an abundance of choices in selecting a vintage Seamaster - anything from a dress watch to a Moon watch.
Unless you are looking for something specific - such as an original Speedmaster Pro Pre-moon Cal 321, or an original Railmaster, you shouldn't have any trouble selecting a good piece.
With vintage watches, replicas (fakes) are not as much a problem as with modern examples, but you still have to keep a close eye open for modifications such as dial and back replacements. Dial replacements are a particular problem, because Omega will often replace a worn, broken, or faded dial with a more modern dial when a vintage watch is sent in for maintenance. The result is often a better looking watch, but it will not be original - even after Omega' own work.
Let us see what you are looking at so we can enjoy the "thrill of the chase" with you. Good luck!

Thanks for the advice! I am looking at a late 60's Cosmic in Stainless steel that my local watchmaker has for sale. It is all original and the dial is very clean, however the hands are showing signs of corrosion and the lume is gone. The case is in really good shape although the logo on the caseback is nearly gone. It also is on the original SS bracelet. I have not fully examined the piece to obtain the serial num ber yet. He wants 400 for the watch. What do you think? Thanks! Luke Mayes

Luke, The Omega Cosmic line is not all that familiar to me. I've only seen one in person, and it was pretty much a junker (cracked crystal, no bracelet/strap, not runnning - really rough condition). Interestingly, the seller still wanted $500.00 for it. They do come with different functions - here is one from the Omega factory site: Omega Cosmic Moon Phase Caliber 27 DL, circa 1947 And here is a really nice modern, solid 18k red (rose) gold Museum piece, also from Omega's factory site: Omega Cosmic Triple Date Moon Phase Ref. 5701.80.03 Caliber 2601 I put this last one in as a teaser Seriously, the price asked for your prospect is in line with what I've seen on the boards. Just make sure the watch will not require a lot of work. As to the hands, you might inqure of Omega as to whether they can supply you with the parts in a refurbishment protocol. Omega is usually responsive to these inquiries. Good luck - let us know what you do.
