Is there a version of a Submariner that comes w/polished center links? I've just spotted an authentic-looking sub on someone but his shirt covered the watch before I could take better look.

Yup, no polished links on the Sub. BUT, if someone wanted polished links they could either add a bracelet with polished links or have the center links on the existing bracelet polished. So even if they were polished, it could still be authentic.

I should point out that, per the original question, there IS a version of the Submariner with polished links - namely you can start with the TT Sub. It all goes up from there.
If you saw polished links on something that looked like a submariner, are you absolutely certain it was not a new GMT II??

Yes. Absolutely certain that it was not a new GMT. Thew bezel is 100% Sub. It's a newer style w/SEL but I didn't notice whether it had holes in the case or not. I saw the watch at my coop apartment meeting. The guy is a neighbor and once I complemented him on his watch, he quickly covered it up w/his jacket and claimed that he didn't want anyone to think that he was "doing well". I said good for you and showed him my Oris regulator which I took of my wrist to demonstrate how light it was. Anyway, the watch looked "real"and i know the guy so I didn't think much of the shiny bits....until now.
