Sorry to ask such a loaded question, and sorry if it was asked before i joined WTF. A comment by JBH regarding a guy who hadn't been shown how to use his Sub' fully got me curious as to what other WTF members experiences of AD's were. I have nothing but respect and admiration for mine here in England, so i'd love to read your experiences too.

Hard to say, because our knowledge as WIS, and therefore expectations are probably higher than most people.
I find the chains, Ernest Jones, Goldsmiths etc embarrassing to talk to about watches, and their sales chat makes me cringe.
If you go into London, then the likes of WOS in Bond St tend to know a bit more. Selfridges are ok, Harrods not so good.

I would have to agree with "adamb"
I travel for work so I get a chance to see many ADs in different cities that i travel to. I think the chains are a bit embarassing - not much more than surface knowledge on a normally plain selection of watches. Also, I don't like the feeling of being "sold" a watch, I think it is something you "buy" for whatever reasons you have personally. I have been in sales my whole life and I hate when another sales person tries to "close" the sale when I'm simply trying to lok at what's in the display case.
In the Midwest I think I am completely spoiled with my AD. I get updates when cool or new product arrives - invitations to events that are always fun and informational. I just feel there is a higher level of ingetrity with a smaller family owned operation - I might be old school. I have never once felt any pressure to purchase - they seem to understand the sickness of watch collecting for me is a marathon not a sprint. I feel completely comfortable referring others there - they always give the same great level of service no matter what you might be looking for.

INteresting what HMH1970 said about the chains. I went to one, and they said they would not sell an LV, Daytona, or any other "desired" watch just to anyone off the street; but, to customers who spend x amount of dollars a year with them. The other AD's attitude was first come first serve. Needless to say, the AD gets all my referrals, and the other AD gets all my bewares. Word of mouth is the best advertisement anyone can get IMHO.

10-4 Timefinder
I was in NYC a while back and a rather large AD was astonished that I had been able to get a SUB LV and a PAM 90 (to be honest it was when the distribution was tighter on the LV). His quote was that he only let's people who spend over 100K with him a year purchase an LV or SS Daytona...I said really? He then went on to name drop that the last SS daytona he "allowed" for purchase was for Robnert Deniro. It's become a bit of a joke in my circle.
Once again it may be an advantage of living in fly over country...

I'm very pleased with my new found AD.. Very helpfull and hold lots of stock to try on and tempt me into parting with my hard earned cash.
No hard sell and let me try on and compare watch after watch.
This is not a large chain, but a small familly business with a nice relaxed atmosphere too.

Eddo: that's how my chosen AD is as well. Though I still enjoy going to the large chain competitor and beating them up a bit.... I do business with them both, but with the small guy more than the big one.
After all, I'm a small business executive - gotta pull for the little guys!

After all, I'm a small business executive - gotta pull for the little guys! And as a large business executive, it's my job to bash you mercilessly into a million tiny, fractured pieces .... OK, just kidding - Kinda...
