Welcome eddo. My advise would be to buy the one which presently fills both your eye and your budget. From the sound of things, you will acquire at least one other Rolex at some point, probably several. I think most of us on this site fall into that caegory. Tempus Fugit, Trainer I think this is a critical question - are you a one watch Rolex buyer or will you buy others? If you're going to buy one and only one Rolex, but the Submariner - no question. But a Sea-Dweller belongs in any Rolex fans collection at some point.

Hey Eddo, Welcome to WTF & the Rolex forum! Well, as has been said, either is a fine choice. I can guarantee whichever you buy 2 things will happen. 1) You'll absolutely love it! It'll give you a lifetime of service. 2) There will be days you wished you bought the other one. So either way you go, you're probably going to run into the days when you say 'man, I wish I'd gotten the other'. But then 20 minutes later you'll be back to loving it & saying boy I"m glad I got this one. It'll be a never ending cycle. ;D Which is why many Rolex fans end up with multiple examples in their collection. But either one would be fantastic choice you really can't go wrong with. SO, a few of my opinions. As B&V said, the Sub is slimmer so if you wear dress shirts, it may fit under the cuff better. But the SD looks dressier without the Cyclops IMO. Do you like heavy watches or prefer them lighter? Neither is light, but the SD is heavier than the sub. This is really a toss up & really it'll come down to which do you like better on the wrist. And oh, BTW - if you decide that the sub is the one, but want the cleaner no cyclops look, the cyclops can be removed. It's only glued on. Then, if you change your mind later on or decide to sell it, you can have it reattached to the crystal. Good luck on your choice & do let us know which one you go with...

Hello again,
Many thanks for the words of advice posted above..
I've just returned from trying on the Sub & the SD and was suitably impressed by the size & weight of the SD which was running no 1 in my choice. Although the Sub looked OK the SD just looked and felt better on my arm.
Then....
The sales person brought out a GMT 2 in black as another comparison, on seeing this, which looked bigger & shinier than the SD and once on my wrist looked superb has really made me think and re-evaluate my choice.
I am now torn 50/50 between the GMT2 and the SD.
Any pro's conns between the two ?

I'm assuming you're talking about the new GMT II with the ceramic bezel, like I've recently purchased.
Since I'm outwardly biased on this one, I should reserve my comments. But, then again, I love to hear myself talk too........
The GMT II presents some exciting advantages over the Seadweller. A quick search of the forum will reveal more information about these, but in summary, they are: 1. 3186 Movement with Parachrom Blu hairspring 2. Ceramic bezel with platinum numbering 3. Supercase 4. Maxi-dial (though this may be common to both choices...) 5. New bracelet with a more substantial clasp and polished center links
I bought the GMT II because I believe it is our first taste of the future of Rolex. I also bought it because it is extremely handsome and the fact that it is still somewhat rare (whereas the submariner line is quite popular, though SD's are an exception). I don't have need for the durability of the SD - so the GMT II will be a nice sport option in my collection (mind you, I already have a few black-dial sport watches including a Planet Ocean, sort of negating the NEED for a Seadweller, like we NEED any of these watches, right?). The GMT II bracelet is also extremely comfortable.
So, my vote is for the GMT II - you won't regret it. You'll probably notice a few more scratches on the GMT II since it's bracelet is polished, but you'll probably be able to sort it out easily with a Cape Cod cloth! ;D Buy the new GMT II and join the club! I'm extremely honored to own one of these - there probably isn't another one running around my home town, so it's extremely rare, but those in the know always talk about it!

Thanks, the GMT II looked very classy and would suit the dressy occasions too. I have seen 2 variations the one I tried had a green finger and one had a red finger what is the difference ? (the shop i visited also sells pre-worn watches and I didn't think to ask whether one was new and one pre-owned due to the number of other questions and my head

If you saw the green 24-hour hand on the GMT II, chances are you're looking at a 116710N (that is the model number listed on my warranty card). The red 24-hour hand does not carry all the new goodies I mentioned in my last post above. You want the green hand, but warning, at $5,950 it is an extremely poor value for an SS watch compared to others in the Rolex line. Then again, you have to pay to be a first-mover, right?

The SD and the GMT II are two very different watches. The SD is a very rugged tool watch...a classic! It still comes down to whichever makes you smile more.

To me being from a sales point of view the Sub is a better choice. They hold a better resale value and how many people really dive deep enough to have a SD? Don't get me wrong there isn't a bad choice. The Sub is just the better choice. And I agree with other people in that it's a classic and timeless piece. A must have if your thinking about starting a Rolex collection.

I've only had my SD for about 8 hours, but I am very impressed. I really like the looks of the Sub, but didn't want to follow the crowd. If you miss the cyclops, your AD can glue one on. One of my buddies had one glued on his SD and it looks fine.

Hello again, I called in at my AD today during my lunch break to see if my SD had arrived or to see whether a date was know when it would arrive and whilst I was there I tried the new GMT II on again... Was this a mistake ?? The answer is No !! I'm now 100% sure I've made the right choice as the GMT II appears too nice to be worn as an every day watch and I would imagine the polished strap would show scratches very easily. Don't get me wrong, but if I was buyng 2 watches, these would (will) be the first two in my collection. I intend to wear my watch daily and would be too affraid of damaging the GMT II which would take away the enjoyment of wearing it (If that makes sense). The SD arrives tomorrow and I cannot wait to collect it ;D Pictures will follow.. P.S. The shop I use also had the new Yacht-Master 2 in both yellow gold & white gold... Now that is a work of art and looks huge Thanks all
