First of all, I'd like to say hello from the UK and to ask for you to go easy on me as this is my first post ;D I'm looking to purchase my first Rolex and am torn between the Submariner and the Sea Dweller. I like the simple looks (No Cyclopse over the date) of the Sea Dweller but do think the Cyclopse is (to some degree) a trade mark of the Rolex brand. I'm sure there are owners of both models that post on this forum and would welcome your feedback and experience / choices you faced when chosing the Sea Dweller or Submariner. Thanks in advance.

Welcome Personally I would go with the Sub. It's classic and easily recognizable, wears comfortably and is a lifetime purchase, grounding any Rolex collection. There is no functional reason to buy an SD. You can't dive that far and the HE valve is only good for a deep submersible trip although they are quite rugged and dependable. They share the same movement as the Sub, but to have a date and not have the distinctive cyclops.... Either choice, of course, would be a good one as there is no loser here.

Hi eddo, hello from geordie-land (Newcastle upon Tyne England for you Stateside). I have both an SD and a Sub and i can live with them both because they are so very different. My first Sub i got about 2 years ago, and sold it about a year ago to my bro-in-law. I picked up a new one Friday last. The SD i've had for 5-6 weeks now. Go and have a look at them both in an Authorised Dealer and just go with your heart. Definitely check out rolexreferencepage.com which is run by John Holbrook, one of the forum administrators. there you will find a wealth of unbiased info on both models. I've been regularly visiting this forum for about a month now, and i can honestly say you will get the best help from the guys who post on here. If i had to have only one i would go for the SD. To me it just feels more substantial, and i do like the fact that you see less of them than Subs. Whilst you would do well to check out some of the dealer-links from this forum, i exclusively use the Goldsmiths Group in the UK (newcastle obviously) and have found them to be fabulous for stock levels and customer service. Whatever your decision, wear it well and i guarantee you will get nothing but joy from your purchase. :-)

Thanks for your responses guys.
Pauleypaul, I intend to go to a local dealer and try both watches on and go with my gut instinct. I do like the heavier style watches (I like to feel I'm getting my 3 worth) which has drawn me towards the SD but looking at pictures of the 2 watches side by side I still cannot decide which one looks the best.
I'm sure I'll know and be able to make the call once I've tried the watches on but until then I would like to gather as much information (pros & conns if there are any) to assist in any desicion I make.
Please keep the comments coming as every response will be appreciated.
thanks again

eddo,
Some other considerations you might want to take into account. Although both are excellent choices, here is some more food for thought.
Do you wear dress shirts often? If so, you might want to give the nob to the Sub since it is slimmer and more easily slides under a shirt cuff.
Do you want to wear something different? If so, you might want to more strongly consider the SD. For every 1 SD out there, I'd bet there are 50 Subs. You'll always pay a touch more for exclusivity.
Do you have a hard time deciding between 2-tone, green bezels, etc? The SD is pretty cool because it only comes one way ..... stainless.
Best of luck with your decision. You can't make a wrong choice here. If you're totally hung up on it, save a few bucks and go with the Sub.
Welcome to the forum and let us know how it goes.

Welcome eddo.
My advise would be to buy the one which presently fills both your eye and your budget. From the sound of things, you will acquire at least one other Rolex at some point, probably several.
I think most of us on this site fall into that caegory.

Hi Eddo welcome to the forum.
I purchased a Sea-Dweller last year and have been very happy with it. However in hindsight this will probably be the only Rolex I can see owing for a very long time. Knowing this now and going back to the time of purchase, I probably would have purchased the Sub as the Sub has much more history attached to it. So my advice is, if you are going to only have one Rolex get the Sub, but if you will own a few Rolex’s get the Sea-Dweller.
Good luck
Paul

Good point!
the elusive third choice! (and the lowest cost option) the sub with no date!
Very clean, simple and elegant. Also an excellent choice...
If the case was larger, I'd have one myself!
