My pastor gave me his Citizen Ecodrive watch to have me take a look at it. The second hand his behaving much like a quartz watch does when the battery is running low. I thought perhaps it just needed some time in the light, and have had in bright light for the past couple of days, but the second hand is still clicking in two second increments. Is it in need of service by Citizen? Any ideas as to cost?

John,
I have a Citizen's ecodrive and according to the manual "When the watch becomes insufficiently charged as a result of not being exposed to light, the second hand changes from 1-second interval movements to 2-second interval movement" What level is the charge indicatator pointing to? Just to recharge an ecodrive under a florescent light may take over 100 hours to recharge. If it is out in bright sunlight it should completely recharge in 9 hours.
Hope this helps,
Gene

But I don't know that's it gotten 9 hours straight exposure....I'll give it a couple of more days. I've had since Saturday night.

I think maybe the solar cells r defective cause it only takes a few minutes to be fully charged for months!...at least thats what the rep told me

We've had some pretty sunny days and the second hand is still stuttering. I'm guessing it's the battery itself which is defective.

Yep, sounds like it could need service. I have two and when they get acting like that I usually just put them on the window sill on a sunny day and they're charged good for 6 more months. If that's not working then I would say the battery needs changed.

I really liked the look and feel of the watch (TT dress model that looked a bit like a Datejust) but he said the bracelet is a hair puller.

I have found the eco-drive to be a bit quirky and unreliable. I have experienced similar problems with two watches I bought for my wife. My watch guy (who will fix anything) said both were beyond redemption and the parts were unavailable. My two cents is to avoid 'em. The eco drive is a fantastic idea, but.....

I have 3 (well 4th one is on the way) of them, all work perfectly. I have a Seiko Kinetic, and that one works perfectly too, even though there have been lots of people complaining about those. Guess I am just lucky. My experience with Citizen service has been top notch. I sent one in for a misaligned bezel, and they did a bang up job.

My comment is based on subjective "evidence" and is no way scientific. I also bought both watches in New York City's Broadway wholesale district - from an AD - but who knows what the story was behind these two pieces. Especially since I bought them for way, way, way below retail. So maybe the lesson is to avoid wholesale blow-outs, not eco-drives (lol). But who can resist a bargain?
