hello again, i just read some reviews of various breitling watches and was surprised by the high number of owners who complain about the accuracy of their watches and the service from breitling on repairs. i would like to hear from you guys who own breitlings and have your opinions because i had made up my mind to buy a superocean steelfish, but want to be sure i wont be buying something that will give me more trouble than joy. thanks

Welcome to the Breitling Forum!
I purchased my first Breitling, a super ocean steelfish x-plus 6 days ago. No matter what you are going to buy, you will always find somebody that reported some kind of problem with it. The super ocean uses a simple but proven ETA movement that is known for being just about bullet proof. Over the past 6 days, my steelfish has gained about 3 seconds and that puts it on par with my Omega AquaTerra Chrono and a Rolex Oyster Date and considerably more accurate than my 5 years old Seamaster pro.
Breitlings have a standard two years warranty and if you buy from an AD I don't think that you have much to worry about.
Keep in mind that for every complaining customer there are thousands or tens of thousands of happy customers.
If you like the tough tool look of the SteelFish I'd say go for it. The StellFish 42 mm is being discontinued and replaced with the X-Plus 44mm so you may be able to get a deal.
Let us know what you decide!

thanks for the reply, i saw your x-plus with blue dial and i loved it, it closed the deal for the steelfish for me. i was going to get the silver dial but your pics convinced me on the blue. i am getting the regular steelfish for 1585 with s.s. bracelet. if i may ask, how much was the x-plus? and do you have an opinion on Alan Furman, they are not AD but guarantee 100% new and original with box, papers, etc. thanks again laazaro

I bought a Breitling Chrono-Matic back in March. A real beauty. It was +2 seconds/day out of the box. Not too shabby and well within COSC standards. That's like .002% variance during a whole day. I think that anything consistently within COSC standards is acceptable. Outside of that the watch probably needs, at least, to be regulated. But, if you're looking for atomic clock accuracy then perhaps a mechanical watch, regardless of brand, may not be the way to go. Now...I have had a problem with the stem mechanism of the Chrono-Matic. I don't know if it was a defect or it was something I did (like turn the crown backwards during the 8:00 pm to 2:00 am no-no period when the movement starts changing the date). I have to admit that I was pretty ticked off that my expensive and just-about-new Breitling even had a problem - but was assured that all brands can have problems or defects. Anyway, my AD sent the watch back to Breitling for repair and I learned today that I will have it back by the middle of next week - a less than 3 week turnaround. Yay, I've missed it!! I understand that's pretty quick for just about any brand. BUT....I can't emphasize this enough - and I'm sure that just about every member of the Watch Talk Forums will concur that you need to find yourself a good AD for whatever you want to buy. No if's, and's or butt's about that. It can make all the difference. I live in Maryland and bought the Chrono-Matic from an AD in New Jersey (I have family there). They are truly a superb jeweler and have treated me very well. When I took the watch back, they were extremely apologetic and said they'd take care of everything. Their repair clerk told me to call in 3 weeks and she would contact Breitling for the status (after telling me that Breitling could take up to 8 weeks to return the watch). I called this morning. She called me back 20 minutes later and said Breitling told her it was on its way back to their shop; that she'd have their in-house watchmaker check it over when it got there and then FedEx it on to me at their expense. Pretty fine service! So...the bottom line is that I think you'll find that Breitling's standards for accuracy are pretty high and that if you find the right AD that you shouldn't have any after-purchase customer service problems. -Ben

... and do you have an opinion on Alan Furman, they are not AD but guarantee 100% new and original with box, papers, etc. thanks again laazaro Their prices seem pretty good, but I would ask them questions about their warranty and who does their service work. Their site states that the watches are warranted by *them* for the same time as the manufacturer. To me, this seems a bit dubious. I would want Breitling to stand behind the watch and not just the seller. I understand that the only way Breitling will honor the warranty is if the watch gets registered with them by the AD. When I bought my Breitling I filled out the paperwork right in the AD and they took care of the registration. There is even a pop-up box on Breitling's web site stating not to buy from non-authorized sellers. Your purchase may be fine, but just something to think about. -Ben

I agree with the above thoughts, altough i dont own a breitling, if you are going to spend thousands of dollars, then a couple hundred for peace of mind is worth it.. go via the AD pathway. mamas

Where are you located? For a bit more than your non AD dealer I can have my dealer ship one to you tax free and you will get the international warranty and they will register your watch with Breitling and send you a cool Breitling hat! :-)
