I am curious to see how different folks feel about the debate between the Planet Ocean and SteelFish X-plus.
Personally, I do not feel that the two watches are in the same category.
The way I look at it, it is pretty much like comparing a Hummer H1 with a Range Rover.
They are both highly capable off-roaders but they are nothing like each other.
Let's take them one at the time.
1. Engine.
Hummer H1 uses a proven, basic, rugged Diesel engine.
Very much like the Breitling which is using the proven, basic, rugged ETA 2824 movement, as the base for the Breitling 17.
The Range Rover uses a high tech Jaguar sourced aluminum block 32 valves V8 with variable valve timing, producing up to 400 horsepower in supercharged form and it has more computers than most households.
Very much like the Omega caliber 2500, a very refined piece of machinery.
2. Case.
The Hummer H1 is constructed from thick heavy steel, designed to withstand anything you throw at it. It may not be the prettiest thing to look at but there is no denying that it's very ugliness is what makes the thing imposing, and desired. It's a tool.
Very much like the Steelfish, which has a 5 mm crystal and the case is at least 4 mm thick at any point.
The RangeRover was designed carefully, giving you that perfect blend of elegance and toughness. It's a gentleman's off road tool.
Very much like the Omega Planet Ocean. It's a very elegant watch, very much at home on Rodeo Drive or while scuba diving. It's more versatile.
The point that I am trying to make is that IMHO those two are not in the same category and I don't think that they should be compared.
The Breitling is the clear tool, purpose built to be tough and it the process it became larger, thicker, heavier. And that's where it's beauty comes from.
The Omega is the elegant choice, a better all around watch, biased more on the dress side than the tool side.
I think that they complement each other as opposed to competing against each other.
