I went to our local Breitling AD today wanting to see what they had in the $2000-$2500 range. Breitling is one brand I would like to own but do not own one yet. The model that really appealed to me was the Chrono Colt Model 287 (Black Dial All SS with the Fighter bracelet). If it were automatic, I might have bought it on the spot. Considering it is a quartz, should I even consider buying it? The other watch under consideration is an Omega Speedmaster Auto Date. Price range are about the same.
By the way, I looked at the Chrono Cockpit and the watch was way too thick for me, aside from the fact it is out of my price target.
Appreciate any opinions. Thanks.

Hey, It is the age old question which bugs many buyers. Me personally, auto every time. There was a time I looked at quartz but I have found the more I get involved with watches the more the pendulum swings towards autos. Both have ups and downs but the Auto seems to have one advantage. Demand which will fuels resale. ;D My opinion and I hope it helps. Aaron

Nothing wrong with quartz. I own a few myself. Hey some of Patek and JLCs top sellers are quartz! Personally, I wouldn't pay that much money for a quartz watch. I consider them expensive jewelry, but to each his/her own.
Given what you said, , it sounds to me like you would not be satisfied with the quartz version.

Automatic or manual. The only quartz I'd buy would be a very thin dress watch or maybe the Breitling Emergency. It's big, It would look right on my thigh, you have to register it with the government... and is one bad dude. Could be used as a weapon as well.
Have you considered a SuperOcean? Not much more money and a step up. And if you ever decide to go the the bottom of the ocean... it will keep on ticking!

I have 2 quartz Breitling I have bought for functional purposes - they have functions you just can't get on an auto. And I got quartz Breitling because I like Breitling. I guess a secondary reason is - the maintenance costs are lower on a quartz as well.. The ones I have are, the B-1 and the Aerospace. So consider what you want from a watch then choose the type you want ..... but I think you've made that decision already All the best! - Marty

Just ask yourself how you feel when you look down and see the tick..tick..tick of the quartz movement. Personally I don't like it But hey, that me!

After hearing from all you guys, as I initially posted I am leaning towards an automatic myself. The only problem is that Breitling does not have a chronograph automatic in the price range I am targeting. I could almost buy two Colts for the price of a Chrono Cockpit, the watch which seem to have all the features I was looking for (except for being very thick).
Oh well, I may have to change my strategy and start looking for a different watch.
Thanks for all the views and opinions.

Maybe a crosswind or chronomat might fit the bill? Also, consider 30% off the retail price in the US from an AD is not unheard of. So shopping around should be fruitful. Hope that helps. - Cheers Marty

I have three automatics and one quartz. I think it's good to have at least one quartz watch in your collection. The good news is that Breitling makes (probably) the most accurate quartz movement out there. So, if you don't own a quartz, then you CAN"T go wrong with a Breitling quartz watch.

I own a Breitling Crosswind and was able to get 30% of from dealer here in the US. It was not much more than your price range...Don't give up. I went to 4 dealers until I found what I wanted at a price I wanted.
