to purchase my first Rolex....but...am having a difficult time wrestling with the choices....either a Red/Black GMT II or an all black Sub Date...both are terrific. Perhaps some divine intervention will show me the way! This is perhaps one of the most common choices I see folks wrestle with, so you're certainly not alone! Here's a few questions to ask yourself that might help: 1. Are you a watch collector or just looking for one watch? Both of these watches are great, but quite different in functions and specifications. If you're a watch collector, it's likely you may be asking the wrong question - which should I get? The right question may be, which should I get first? 2. How often do you wear a suit? I wear a suit 3 or more times a week, so this is an important question for me. The Sub is a bit more subtle, and I think dresses up easier than the GMT. That said, purists will say neither should be worn with a suit. I'll defer to James Bond on this issue - if he can pull off a Sub on a Nato strap with a tux, then a Sub with a suit is fine. 3. Are you a diver or traveler? If you dive often, then the sub might be better. If you travel out of your time zone often, the GMT might be more useful. 4. Does one make you smile more? When all of the facts have been taken into consideration, perhaps the most pertinent factor is, which one do you gravitate toward most. Again, not an easy decision but perhaps the above will help somewhat. I own a GMT, Sub, and Sea-Dweller so I guess I'm really bad at making choices! ;D John

John...I wear a suit every day...I never dive....however, I have been known to venture into the deep end of the pool, on occasion (as deep as 9 feet!)..Whew! That being said, none of my suits are red...guess I'm back to square one..I could see "collecting" both, eventually, but my wife has "other" plans for some of my hard earned money, like a new kitchen, new tile floors, new carpeting, etc...the list is seemingly endless! When the decision is finally made, I will send a wrist shot, and picture of the remodeled kitchen as well! Thanks for the advice!

the GMT and the Submariner and while both our great watches, I would lean towards the Submariner as well unless you are looking at the all black bezel on the GMT. I also think the all black bezel is a little "dressier".
Either way though I'm sure you will like the watch you eventually choose.

Hi everyone My first post....anyway I am the new owner of an all black s/s sub it is an "F" serial number (2004 I think?) and I could not be more pleased. I had a Datejust and it was too small and too formal as I NEVER where or even own a suit (lucky me!) I feel the sub is the way to go. Unless you need the second time zone indicator. Also, the sub is more "sub"stancial in it look which is why I love it. Good luck and most of all have fun making you choice ;D TTFN

Gill, I've always thought that the Sub/date was my "grail" watch. Last month, while at my Rolex dealer to pick up a TT GMT-Master that I had sent off for a restoration, I took a few minutes to look closely at a new Sub/date. I also tried on (among others) the Explorer II, TT blue sub, sub/no date, and the "all-black" and red/black GMT-Masters. To my great surprise, the all-black GMT-Master was the best looking watch in the place. Period. You get the look of the sub, plus that cool red GMT hand that makes that dial "pop", much like the red second hand on the new TOG. Good luck with your decision. Again, just my .02
