Hi! As the new guy I thought I should offer something and this is it: www.watches.co.uk/index1.php?id=serialsNow, all you die-hards probably already got this down, but for me it´s useful and simple. I do have a question as well: Will a fliplock clasp from a sub fit a "normal" Oyster bracelet? You see I have a new Datejust (unlike most of you who seem to prefer GMT or Sub) and have the opportunity to buy a clasp from a sub. I think it could be a nice touch. Come to think of it I have another question: I do like the 16610 sub and I've been thinking about getting a used one. Any thoughts about specific batches where improvements where made? I'm thinking of things like sapphire crystal (late 80's?) and solid end links ('99?) Thanks! /Martin Mann

Do check out some of the links on www.rolexreferencepage.com for some other great sites with great reference info! In answer to your first question, I'm going to guess no, given that the bracelets are differenent sizes. You could probably put a sub flip lock on say, an Explorer II, because the bracelets are the same size, but not on a Datejust I don't beleive...of course, I've never tried it. Definitely go for the > '99 16610's....better lume than the 80's models, and better bracelets. John

Ok!
I'll stick to my Datejust as it is. Not a bad looking watch. And why fiddle with something that works, right?
I can't get over the look and feel of a 16610 sub. I had them both in my hands at the dealer (after putting the GMT to the side!) and went with the Datejust. I figured it would pass the test of time better ie I wouldn't get tired of it after 20 or so years. But now I crave the sub anyway (as well as the Datejust, of course!). Well, better get that savings account fat and juicy!
If anyone is interested I can mention that a 16610 ia about $5K in Sweden at todays exchange rate. That means I can fly to the US and get it and still come out ahead (and with a tan as well!). On that note: Does anyone know where Rolex watches are cheapest in the world? (With or without the tan thing)

I agree with John regarding the bracelet and the Sub answer. Any 16610 after 99 is probably the best bet because it has sapphire, better lume and SEL.
Price-wise, Rolex has some sort of international pricing cartell that keeps prices basically the same the world over, accounting for differences in economies and exchange rates. This is because most who buy Rolex tend to travel and could in theory travel to where they are the cheapest.
So while the list prices are the same pretty much all over, relatively speaking, the difference is how much a dealer can discount. No discounts in Canada as decreed by Rolex Canada on sports models.
I have heard that dealers in Hong Kong offer excellent discounts. A buddy from home here bought his 16610 in Hong Kong for about CDN$4000, which is CDN$2000 off list (and here you have to tack on an extra 15% tax!).
Hong Kong! Go there! NOW! ;D
