For me it was James Bond in the Roger Moore era. I was about 7 or 8 when I overheard a conversation between my father and his cool (I thought at that time) bachelor best friend. He was telling my dad about his new sub and how it was what Bond wore. Since I thought James Bond was 2nd in coolness only to Star Wars, I asked him to let me see it close-up. I will never forget how cool the watch was and what stuck in my memory was the Rolex crown logo.
Years later as a teen in the late 80's I've acquired an all gold Presidential w/diamond dial in a poker game. Considering the pot the gold watch represented a mere $800 and the guy honorably surrendered the box and papers at a later date, as per agreement.
I wore the watch for years until the early 90s when my friends started busting my chops & called the gold day/date a gypsy nugget
bracelet or some tacky mobster's watch. At that time I put it in a safety deposit box.
Fast forward to1995 and I finally got my first Sub. It was a TT and if I wrote how I got it, the post would probably get deleted. Suffice it to say it was repayment of debt. Years later I got the SS sub I always wanted.
My point is the Rolex sub held a spacial place in my heart. There was a nostalgia factor as was with Star Wars & James Bond. I see Rolex watches in a more emotional way as opposed to ma status symbol that Rolex represents, which is fine with me.
Sorry for the long post
Mike
PS: My fathers "cool friend" had a comb-over & a mustache , as I later saw in pictures. Not cool at all, especially the push broom mustache. LOL.
