Guys, a question for all you seiko divers watch owners.. how hard is the hardex crystal? i have always been put off buying these seiko divers because of the hardex crystal.. some say it scratches easily.. how true is this?? i wish that they would use either saphire crytsal or even acryllic crystal, wear you can buff out the scratches. mamas

Hi Mamas Hardlex is man made and is constructed of silicon and barium then heated to create its hardness. Though it is not quite as hard as sapphire it is well up there. Seiko uses a variety of materials to make their crystals. From what I've learned the use the following crystal types in ascending order of hardness and scratch resistance: Acrylic (softest) Mineral Hardlex Sapphlex Sapphire (hardest) Hope this helps.

My experience has been that hardlex is a very scratch resistant material, as clifton says it's man made, but thats not all bad...

My OM crystal has been great under some fairly trying conditions, as I am a klutz, and have a back problem that occasionally causes my legs to go numb and makes me fall. That's one of the reasons I have cut down on driving, and don't travel a long way to show my dog anymore. Thankfully, I have friends that understand, and don't mind doing the driving. One thing is for sure, It's harder than my head, which is saying a lot!

That's a tough problem to have. Do you have any kind of warning before your legs go numb? Have you been to specialists to see if it can repaired? Hope you don't mind the questions. Feel free to tell me to mind my own business. That seems to be a dangerous condition. We wouldn't want to see a watch damaged!

I do physical therapy and stretches and exercises at home. I'm trying to avoid surgery, as most who have had it do not have that great of a story to tell. I can feel the numbness start, and would be able to pull over and stop. When it causes me to fall, it usually also involves my own stupidity! I can live with it for now. The heating pad and the meds are the next best friend to my watches, and I wouldn't want to see any of them damaged either.
Thanks for asking!

I managed to put a 2mm long scratch in the hardlex crystal on my SKX007 while in Costa Rica last week. Not sure what scratched it, but I have a feeling I banged it into something while on a sailboat. Glad it's only a $100 watch.
