Invicta Subaqua NOMA II Limited Edition[/I][/u]
There are a few key items in Invictas stable of timepieces that some consider near legendary, and the original Subaqua NOMA is certainly one of them. It was built to be one of the toughest, meanest looking watches around, and it had the ability to function as tough as it looked. Now nearly two years after the original release comes the newest in the Subaqua line… the Subaqua NOMA II Limited Edition. This is an all new Subaqua and bears only slight resemblance to the original. From bezel to bracelet the entire watch is a fresh, new design. As with the original this new Subaqua is 100% Swiss Made, and the fit & finish are absolutely flawless.
Bigger is certainly better. This Goliath boasts a case diameter of 46mm (51mm including crown), and is thicker than TWO original Subaquas! From front crystal to back crystal this beast measures 20mm in thickness. There are few watches on the market that can match the diameter, thickness, and weight of this new Invicta. Tipping the scales at over 200gr you will certainly know that this watch is on your wrist.
Constructed entirely of surgical grade 316L Stainless Steel the SA II can withstand nearly anything you throw at it. The round case follows the same design as the original SA in the respect that from a side view it looks somewhat donut shaped. This not only makes the watch comfortable, but it also distinguishes itself from just about every other watch out there. The unique shape will be an attention-getter.
Sitting high atop the case is a unidirectional rotating bezel that is deeply grooved for a solid grasp, and embossed with timing indications. At the 12 o’clock position is a gigantic Tritnite luminescent dot.
Moving to the side of the case you will notice 2 screwdown pushers, and a newly designed screwdown crown with locking crown guard. The new locking crown guard is in place to reduce the pressure from the screw threads when the watch reaches its tested 500m/1650 feet of water resistance. This watch signifies the highest level of water resistance ever offered by Invicta.
To aid in the extreme level of water resistance Invicta has outfitted the front and back of the watch with Sapphire crystals that are 7mm thick. The top crystal is generously curved, and from the side you can see how incredibly thick this Sapphire crystal really is.
The dial under that incredible Sapphire is richly textured and appointed by Tritnite filled gas tubes for luminescence. This is the raw formula of Tritnite and must be encapsulated due to its slightly radioactive state. This method of lume will prove to be extremely bright in all lighting conditions, and the tubes provide a safe housing for the gas. These special tubes of Tritium are SELF POWERED and require no external light source to charge them. Each hour indicator as well as the hands glow a bright green while the 12 o’clock indication glows orange.
The hands are also equipped with the Tritium gas tubes and have skeletonized tips.
The satin finished dials are available only in 3 colors: silvertone, black, and "Invicta Blue" which is a vibrant and radiant deep blue. Each dial is adorned with a new pattern which to my eye simulates the look of reptilian skin.
The total production of this watch is 1,000 pieces and that includes each dial color. Once all 1,000 are sold this design will be retired, and Invicta can once again begin designing the next generation of Subaqua.
Flipping the watch over you peer through a reinforced steel case back that holds another Sapphire crystal. Forged from a solid block of 316L Stainless Steel the case back is screwed in with 6 screws for extra protection against extreme pressures encountered in 500m of water. Engraved onto the case back are the Invicta logo, the Swiss Made designation, the stated water resistance, and the Limited Edition status (0000/1000).
Inside the case dwells what many consider to be the finest and most reliable chronograph movement available from Switzerland, the Valjoux 7750. The 25 jewel mechanical automatic chronograph is beautified by Invictas new signature… the Black Ionic Rotor. All of the functions operate smoothly, and the pushers respond with a solid "thunk" when they are pushed. Many have said that the Valjoux 7750 is "built like a tank" well now it seems to finally have a tank built around it… and the union is a perfect one.
Bolted directly to the case via knurled screws is one of the largest and thickest bracelets I have ever seen. The massive hinged endlinks provide a solid connection between bracelet and case.
Attention to detail abounds in this new bracelet from the sculpted center links down to the beveled edges on each of the outer links. If there was ever one area of opportunity for the original Subaqua, it was the clasp design. Many could not size the bracelet to fit precisely, but Invicta has eliminated that worry by providing a fliplock safety clasp on this new bracelet. Six of the 1.5" links can be easily removed and further fine tuning for fit can be accomplished via the micro-adjustments on the clasp. The generous bracelet should fit up to a 10" wrist.
For the 1st time ever Invicta has produced a 500m water resistant automatic chronograph that not only LOOKS like it is built like a tank, but also feels just as solid. Weighing in at over 220 grams it seems to be the heaviest watch Invicta has ever released.
From the Tritnite gas tubes to the custom designed locking crown guard this new Subaqua is an impressive step forward for Invicta. With a total production of 1,000 pieces worldwide, the Subaqua II won’t be around for long, hopefully the Subaqua III will be equally as innovative.
The Subaqua NOMA Limited Edition could easily pass for an $8,000-$10,000 timepiece…. But knowing Invicta as we all do, we can expect it to release for a mere fraction of that.
