FAKE, FAKE, FAKE, FAKE, FAKE
Rolex never had a 'Chuck Yeager' issue GMT. Sure, Yeager has had a long association with Rolex, but they haven't issued an engraved caseback GMT, ever.
The only Rolex watches I know of that come with engraved casebacks are the ladies DJ (that may have stopped) the SD and the winners of the Rolex 24 at Daytona get engraved SS Daytonas (in a beautiful big cherrywood box).
I'm not saying the watch is fake necessarily, but the authenticity is not from the factory, unless Yeager himself bought a bunch of GMTs and had the casebacks engraved by an aftermarket jeweller.
Either way, I'd run in the opposite direction.

This was an interesting thread from the past. The base watch in the picture is definitely genuine. I'm 100% sure that the case is genuine... crystal, crown and bracelet look genuine too... so it's not a fake watch in the true sense of word but the DIAL might be fake... which of course makes this watch a hoax. Interesting idea anyway.

The cert. says the watch came from The Real McCoy's Japan. They were a company that specialized in making high quality replica flight jackets. They are no longer in business. There's still a division in New Zealand though. Maybe they had this done to a genuine GMT Master II and made their own commemorative. Just a guess.

Good detective work GMT2. I have studied the Rolex sports models quite a lot and I know a genuine case when I see one. This looks way too perfect to be a "replica watch". Hand stack, crystal, etc... is correct. Everything is correct so the base watch must be genuine. That caseback looks interesting too. But then again... you just need a fake dial and a machine that can make engraving like that. Shouldn't be too difficult, really. But hoax it is... definitely. But not a fake watch. Just wanted to point it out.

Question is, if it is real or even a hoax, why would they base this watch on the old version of the GMT II? Notice the old case (with holes) and non-SEL bracelet.

Perhaps they're trying to give impression that this "Chuck Yeager" model is a rare vintage?

The date on the cert. in the second picture looks like it says Sep. 21 1996. I'm not positive but that's what it looks like to me. I purchased my GMT Master II in July of 1997 and it looks just like the one above. Without the Chuck Yeager stuff of course. My guess is it was done back in the mid to late 90's before the newer case and the SEL. My GMT is almost nine years old but I still love it. Old style case and non SEL doesn't bother me. I can always wear my SD if I want the newer style ;D.

Yep... non-SEL wouldn't bother me, either. Sometimes they make this annoying "rattling" noise though. But that can be fixed with oiling.
Black/Red GMT is extremely classy looking watch. Strange that people always refer to Pepsi as original but the model number indicates that Red/Black is original.
PS: Based on my observations black/red seems to be the best seller of the GMT line. At least there are more black/reds than Pepsi versions for sale in the second hand market... especially these newer ones. What do you think?

I've never seen a Pepsi bezel in person. I think they are really unique looking but red is my favorite color followed closely by black so it was a no brainer for me. I probably would have bought an all black bezel model if the AD would have had one in stock. Magnum P.I. was my first introduction to Rolex when I was a kid. He wore a GMT Master with the all black bezel IIRC. I should try to find a vintage one someday. The wife said no more watches for a while. Well, no more Rolex watches for a while ;D. I think you are right though. The red and black bezel model seems to be the most popular model.

I think we are digressing a bit. The watch is a hoax that some poor sucker is going part with megabucks to buy this.
CY was a hero aviator, no doubt. I loved the guy when I was a kid. I don't think he had anything to do with this! Anyone worked out how old CY is?
